California employers are subject to multiple mandatory training requirements depending on company size, industry, and workforce structure.
At a minimum, employers may be required to provide:
- Sexual harassment prevention training (under Government Code § 12950.1)
- Workplace violence prevention training (under Labor Code § 6401.9)
- Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) training under Cal/OSHA
- Industry-specific safety training where applicable
Additional training obligations may apply in regulated industries or for certain job classifications.
Failure to comply can result in administrative penalties, regulatory enforcement, and increased exposure in employment litigation. Training is not simply a compliance formality — it is often examined when defending harassment, retaliation, or workplace safety claims.
