Effective January 1, 2025, California Labor Code section 1137 (known as the California Worker Freedom from Employer Intimidation Act (Senate Bill 399)) prohibits employers from requiring employees to attend meetings or listen to communications covering political or religious matters, including discussions about unionization.
The Act strictly prohibits employer-mandated meetings in which employees are required to attend and listen to the employer’s opinion about religious or political matters, including the decision to join or support a labor organization. A meeting is considered mandatory if an employee is subject to discharge, discrimination, retaliation, or any other adverse action because the employee declines to attend.
